Wow! What a month for Riz Kids!

Two weeks ago we announced our inaugural Kim Rizzo Penway Scholarship winners – Dewayne McKinnon and Langston Speed. It has been incredible getting to know these guys and be a small part of their journey. Both are poised to do big things in the future and we are proud to welcome them to the Riz Kids family.

At the check presentation ceremony on the field prior to the Nats game against the Marlins, Langston mentioned how much he’d love to meet starting shortstop (and overall badass) CJ Abrams. Little did he know, CJ has offered to volunteer his time for Riz Kids and was part of the presentation! The guys chatted and the smiles could be seen from section 402. It was truly special to see. Mike then had the duo up to his general manager box where lots of questions (and cupcakes) ensued. It was a marquee night for our foundation – one that we envisioned when we launched it earlier this year.

Yesterday, we tabbed Everybody Wins DC as our Riz Kids Partners for Change grantee. We have committed a $20,000 investment, in addition to volunteering and amplifying their great work through our channels. Through one-on-one mentoring, read-aloud activities, and free book distributions, EWDC helps children build the skills they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. The grant will fund Power Readers – a one-on-one mentoring program that helps children build reading and social-emotional skills through weekly sessions with a caring volunteer – at Van Ness Elementary School in Southeast, Washington, D.C. We love this organization and think you will, too. Read more here.

If you’d like to consider supporting our foundation, don’t forget to purchase a ticket to our Blackjack & BBQ Bash here. And if you don’t, that’s ok. We hope that you’ll consider donating your time or money to another organization in your community. Or help a neighbor. Or buy a coffee for the next person in line. Or have a conversation with someone who might be lonely. This world could certainly use more love and empathy.

Thanks for following along!

Have a safe and fun 4th!
